That was ugh-ly. Trump won. We lost. And America and the world will suffer profound consequences. We offered Americans the opportunity to turn the page, choose a new way forward, elect a new generation of leadership. Our candidate rose to the occasion and we unified enthusiastically behind her. But a majority of Americans who voted chose Trump. As we grieve this loss and take time to process what this defeat means for our party and our country, and prepare ourselves for the struggles ahead, we should remember that one of the lessons of Trump’s first term is that it’s a long haul. We need to recharge and prepare ourselves, mind, body, and soul, for the work we’ll need to do together to keep ourselves and our communities safe and lay the groundwork to achieve better election outcomes in the future. Take care of yourself and the people you love. Plant bulbs that will bring you joy in the spring. Mute voices and channels that bring you down. We need each other, and each of us, now more than ever. We will have frank conversations about what went wrong, what we or our candidate or her campaign could or should have done better or differently, and the apparently ongoing realignment of voters based on gender, race, age, and education level, and what can and should be done in response. But for now, it’s enough to let the initial shock and despair of losing (again) to Trump fade a bit and catch up in the parts of our life that we may have had to neglect as we focused on the election. We remain hopeful that Democrats will take control of the House, although results so far are mixed. We’re thankful to live in a state and county with a strong Democratic government and values and a willingness to fight for them. We will report separately, after ballots have been counted more fully, on some very important successes we’ve helped to achieve in local races. Thank you to all of you for the financial support and volunteer time you contributed to this campaign. We know that if we don’t do the work we can’t win, even if sometimes we don’t win even though we’ve done the work. Keep faith and carry on. There is always tomorrow, and a next election in which important decisions will be made. |
